Scabfields takes place in the fictitious United State of New Sherbet, the only state to ever have a Native American governor as well as the only state that borders on Canada, Mexico, and Cuba. Its uniquely ambiguous geographic location makes the residents of the "Everywhere" State "everywhere late." This has led to New Sherbet not appearing on any maps, nor there being a stripe to commemorate the state as one of the fourteen original colonies, nor a star to show that they are a member of the Union. Consequently, New Sherbeters live in a unique legal limbo.
Scabfields first saw the light of day some time in early August 2006. Around then, the author had decided to start working on a comic, possibly for publication on the web, possibly for publication in a student newspaper. The characters of Finn, Nikki, and Ted were quickly born, soon accompanied by Grandpa and Letitia. After a long search, the comic finally received the name "Scabfields", and the author was damn proud of finally coming up with it.
For a year, the comic didn't progress anywhere. Over time, though, stories began to pile up, drawn primarily from personal experience and random inspiration, and the author finally felt he had accumulated sufficient finished comics and grown adept enough at coloring and shading to maintain a regular update schedule at a certain standard of quality. Plucking up his courage, the author applied to Comic Genesis for a space to host his comic on the 5th of September, 2007. And so a week later, "Scabfields" was born. (Which means that the comic's real birthday is September 12th.) |
