Today is the Day of German Unity! Hooray!

17 years ago, almost a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) were reunited under the banner of the Federal Republic. It's an achievement we celebrate along with the Yemenites and something we wish will eventually work out for the Cypriots and Koreans.

The Day of German Unity replaced the 17th of June as the West German national holiday. Not necessarily a bad thing, since the 17th of June, 1953 saw the bloody repression of protests in East Berlin at the hands of the Red Army.
